Meet Tyler

TylerI want to tell you about Tyler. Tyler is a 2½ year old boy whose father is currently receiving Recovery Support Services at the SpiritWorks center.

An active little guy, with big brown eyes, he is filled with the wonder of childhood.  Tyler visits the center on occasions when his father comes for his weekly check-in group.  Tyler is quite a busy little guy when he is here.  His laughter and giggles resonate through the center.  He feels at home here and has won the hearts of all of the staff and regular volunteers.

Just four months ago, Tyler was being bounced back and forth between his parents, and eventually moved into an alternative living arrangement apart from both of his parents.  Jared, his father, desperately wanted to be with his son; however, he had just been released from treatment and prior to that prison.  He had no job, no residence of his own, nor any transportation; however; he was committed to being a dad and providing for his son.  Tyler, it seems, was the motivating factor for his recovery. Jared and Tyler became, and remain, members of the SpiritWorks "family."  Jared came to SpiritWorks upon release from treatment when he transitioned into a local Recovery Housing Program.  He receives SpiritWorks' recovery support services graciously, and has found ways to contribute to the center by regularly volunteering to help in center activities.

How has SpiritWorks helped me change my life?

It has given me my mother back.  Daniel (age 13)

I no longer am living in isolation.  The people, the center and the activities provide me a safe, sober supportive outlet.  Kevin  (age 35)

I get the encouragement, understanding and support I need to continue my journey in recovery and wellness.  Mary  (age 70)

By helping me earn my license, reconnect with my daughter, maintain my job, and have, or know that I have, someone who supports me unconditionally. Steve (age 41)

It has changed my life by allowing me to help others work on preparing themselves for the next phase of their life.  Charlotte (age  32)

It has given me a place to live out, with purpose, my personal journey of recovery.  It is a testimony of who I am today and who I can become.  Jan  (age 42)

It taught me how to talk to my dad about his addiction and recovery.  Troy (age 8)

Jared recently went to court and was awarded full custody of Tyler.  During a recent telephone conversation with Jared he freely offered, "I owe it all to being a part of this program."  "It made all of the difference in the world to be able to come here and get things straight for me and my son."  Now Jared and Tyler have a fresh start and hope for a positive future.  He is now a full time dad, holds down a full time job, has plans to go to school in order to be able to get a better job and be able to support his son, and will soon be moving into an apartment with Tyler.

Jared will be leaving the Recovery Housing Program soon, but wants to remain a part of SpiritWorks.  "I want to be able to keep coming" he says, to which we have responded, "you can," "we will just have to figure out how to make that happen."  You see Jared has no money to pay for his continued participation in Recovery Support Services at the SpiritWorks Center.  Jared knows that without continued recovery support services he is at risk for relapse and losing everything he has worked so hard to obtain including Tyler.   "I just want to be Tyler's dad." -Jared

We all know a Tyler, Jared, a Daniel or a Steve! Please donate to SpiritWorks to help us help those we serve.
